Please take a closer look at Massachusetts Alternate Assessment Model, prior to Friday night. These tools will help you to become as familiar as possible with all aspects of appropriate curriculum development for learners with cognitive challenge.

  1. Massachusetts Alternate Assessment Model (prior to Friday, August 5)
  2. Stages Developmental Framework (in class Friday & Saturday)

This will take you a couple hours so chunk your approach to studying these resources into manageable time elements. This assignment takes the place of your second Sunday afternoon.

Below are the links of the materials to read before class on August 5.
1. Download the 2016 Educator’s Manual. Review section H, Guidelines for collecting data on Student Performance, pages 36-41.

2. Review the Introduction to MCAS-Alt PowerPoint. This will give you an idea of what is expected in the alternate assessment portfolio. Be sure that you understand how to collect primary evidence of learner performance.

3. In addition, please look for the Sample Portfolios available on the website.

  • If you are new to alternate assessment, this will give those who have never constructed a portfolio a little sample, without totally overwhelming you.
  • For those who have completed portfolios, the scoring rubrics would helpful to review. [Appendix D pages 37-41] http://www.doe.mass.edu/mcas/alt/results.html

4. Look at the Stages Skills Checklist to gain a basic understanding for learning tools used with student's with significant cognitive disabilities.

Reading & Reflection #3: (10 points) Share your impressions of Massachusetts Alternate Assessment model using this Padlet link.

Be prepared to compare and contrast these two approaches (local and national). Here are some initial guiding questions. You are not limited to these questions. In fact, it is important for you to expand this thinking as you consider the relevance of this curriculum approach. What are your impressions of each approach to curriculum? What are the strengths in each approach? What are your concerns? How do these approaches have impact on writing an IEP?

Be prepared to come to class on our second day (first Saturday morning) with your thoughts after reviewing peer's posts to the discussion. Post your draft before Friday, August 5.
